Hayes-Bickford Cafeteria

Hayes-Bickford Cafeteria, - 1326 Massachusetts Avenue

The “Hayes-Bick,” as it was called, was a cafeteria where Harvard and other students gathered, and where many performers would go before or after shows for food. A hangout for Cambridge police as well, the cafeteria provided a location where the police were directly exposed to the free-spirited folk musicians and their entourages. Since the police viewed the Hayes-Bick as their turf, they kept a close eye on the restaurant and other folk hangouts to monitor those whom the police scathingly referred to as “pseudo-beatniks.”
